I do love my coffee.
I do hate Monday mornings.
Not because it is the beginning of the week. Well…perhaps that is part of it.
As a matter of fact I am sure that is most of it.
Just one more day.
Is that too much to ask?
One more day to get myself pulled together. Get things setup just right for the week ahead. I admit–I do get the Sunday blues.
And then I remember there’s coffee. Sweet. Delicious.
Strong.
Dark and handsome coffee.
Albert Camus once said, “Should I kill myself or have a cup of coffee?”
Point taken, my friend. Point taken.
While the rest of country gets ready for layers, boots, socks and hot soul-warming dishes for Fall folks in the South are experiencing cool fronts. And by ‘cool fronts’ I mean that with the high of 90 and minimal humidity it feels like a cool Fall day. Did I mention that we have apples coming in too? Just a further jest that Fall is coming. Even though it is 90 dang degrees outside.
Truly cardigan weather.
I also admit I am little late to this boat.
This boat floating in a sea of cold brew coffee.
And by late I mean making it my dang self. Could someone slap me please?
Slap me for spending all that money at the grocery store for pre-made cold brew.
Don’t get me wrong I’ve made it in the past. And then I apparently experienced amnesia because when I have crazy busy weeks ahead I will just buy the stuff. Time saver. And now I will just call it what it is: L to the A, LAZY!
Sure it takes a little planning–got to give it about/at least 12 hours to steep.
But then. Then you have a mild, virtually no acid, bad-to-the-bone coffee concentrate to get you through the entire. Yes, ENTIRE. Work week ahead. And as the theory goes you may actually use less coffee saving you hard earned monies. You ain’t got to tell me twice.
I. AM. THERE.
and here you are:
PS. You can thank me later.
Cold Brew Coffee
¾ oz of coarsely ground coffee per every 8 oz cup of water.
What kind of coffee you ask? Well, my personal preference is Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. It seems that this preferable for most coffee drinkers. But it is absolutely freaking fabulous with just about any South American bean. Check out Velo Coffee for what I think is the most perfectly roasted beans behind Intelligentsia Coffee. Didn’t know I was a coffee snob, did ya? I can’t help it. It is one thing I will not skimp on no matter what the circumstances may be.
Anywho. Back to the recipe … pour filtered room temperature water over coarsely ground coffee in a french press. Allow to steep for at least 12 hours–24 hours is optimal. Press the pot and strain over cheese cloth anyway just to make sure there’s no grinds in your concentrate. 4 cups works nicely in a quart size ball jar for your fridge.
Please don’t mistake it for iced tea–that one was rough.
To make your beverage:
usually a couple of ounces over ice with milk works out well. Real nice.
Here’s the real talk:
However if you’re like me this ratio can change daily. Some days I do 4 ounces–okay, most days–add some milk, pure cane sugar, and then I add a few ice cubes.
Drag a comb across your head, find your way downstairs and drank a cup. And looking up I noticed I was…right on time.
